Lucas on 9 - WINTER HOURS:
Thursday through Sunday Noon to Closing
We look forward to serving you.
The Lane Family
Lucas on 9 by Nancy McCallum
Meal times are very much a family affair for the Lane
family – that's meal time as in hosting 100 or more
people at the Lanes' family restaurant, Lucas on 9, in Cape
Porpoise.
The owners are a local family immersed in the restaurant business; for eight
years the Lanes, with the help
of their children, now
adults, owned and operated the Fisherman's Catch in
Wells, a thriving eatery on Harbor Road.
Deborah Lane
describes the cuisine of Lucas on 9 as: "Good American
food at affordable prices. We serve good steak and fresh
seafood." With the menu's blend of classic steak and
seafood dishes, plus pasta and other Italian dishes,
"It's old world meets new," Deborah Lane says. The
restaurant, open for lunch and dinner, also offers
sandwiches and traditional Maine fried foods.
With son
Jonathan in the kitchen, there are bound to be a few
creative twists as well; he is an experienced cook who
has worked in a variety of kitchens around the country.
His travels are reflected in dishes such as the
Louisiana spicy crab soup or the bread pudding with
whiskey (offered occasionally as a special), a dessert
he made while cooking aboard riverboats on the
Mississippi near New Orleans. (As for daily specials,
there are between six and eight every day, Jonathan
says. )
Everything is made from scratch and Jonathan is
sensitive to the dining public's increasing interest in
eating healthy foods. For example, multigrain pastas and
wraps and offered as specials and the veggies and the
entree specials will represent foods that are in season.
Vegetarians will appreciate entrees such as Vegetable
Pasta– fettuccini with chopped tomatoes, olives and
garlic – as well as an eggplant sandwich. The eggplant
is grilled or fried and served with sauteed onions and
tomatoes on a roll with roasted garlic mayo.
The menu
also reflects the input of Corey Lane, who assists her
mother in managing the front of the house.
A windowed wall separates the dining room from the
bar, giving the restaurant two distinct areas. The bar
is both cozy and spacious, with plenty of stools and
several high bistro-type tables, plus large screen
televisions.
Not
to be forgotten is the contribution of father John Lane,
an accountant with a busy practice in Kennebunk. He
comes to the family restaurant evenings and weekends.
The Lanes are excited about their new endeavor. Already
their careful attention to details and the hard work
have paid off. As Deborah notes, "The feedback has been
phenomenal about the colors and the food and the
atmosphere."
The restaurant's spring hours of operation: 11:30 AM to close;
We are open Thursday through Sunday until Memorial Day Weekend.. Take-out orders are available and
reservations are accepted. The restaurant is open ten
months of the year; it closes mid-December through
mid-February. FMI: 967-0039.
